These diets are successful at weight loss, but the diets are not sustainable over a long period of time. The perception that carbohydrates as a whole are bad for you and be avoided in order to lose weight is quite frankly a load of nonsense. There is a lot spoken about carbohydrates in the dieting world and I think it is fair to say that many people misunderstand the nature of carbohydrates. Similar to fats and proteins there are good and bad carbohydrates. For a healthy diet and to aid weight loss you should avoid the bad carbohydrates as much as possible. Foods that fall in this category include white bread, cakes and biscuits, sodas, chocolate and chips to name a few. These processed foods contain very few nutrients and fiber, they have very high levels of sugar which make them calorie dense; as a result the body turns them into fat deposits very easily. Put simply the more of these types of food you eat the more weight you will gain!

However the good news is there foods which contain carbohydrates which are good for you, such as raw fruits, seeds, vegetables, wholegrain bread and whole meal pasta. The carbohydrates in these foods are slow burning, therefore they take longer to digest burning more calories in the process. They also contain natural fiber which is an appetite suppressant, eating these healthy foods will make you feel full up for longer which makes you less likely to gain weight.

The important thing to remember when dieting and losing weight is that the body needs a balance of all the food groups to function properly, by cutting out carbohydrates altogether you will become lethargic and will slow your metabolism. Eating the right sorts of carbohydrates in the correct amounts will help you to lose weight as well as boost your energy levels and metabolism.
